    Description

Manufactured in the Early 1920's, this impressive Federal Model DX-Type 58 was made by the Federal Telephone and Telegraph Company. Federal radios were known for their extremely high quality components and manufacturing, and so their radios were significantly more expensive than the average early 20's radios. This Type 58 was an upgrade from the slightly less expensive Type 57.
This radio has been a part of my radio collection for many years, on a shelf in a temperature controlled environment. And I have enjoyed owning it. I wouldn't call this "Rare" but I have only seen 3 or 4 in person in 50 years of collecting. Even here on ebay I have only seen a couple offered for sale.
You can tell that this radio's cabinet is all original by the flaking black paint on the copper alloy cabinet. I have not seen original paint on the metal cabinet 57 or 58 that was not flaking. I doubt the builders were thinking about a 100 year paint job. I suspect the metal cabinet was for shielding of the radio's RF & AF circuits. The interior of the radio appears to be complete and pretty much untouched until I opened it for pictures. I tested the tubes and they are all bad, which is sad as I wanted to try it out. The radio's condition looks so good that I think it will work with 4 good tubes. I have a power supply for old battery radios (Arbe III) and a good outdoor antenna but I couldn't find at my fingertips, four good 01A tubes for testing.
    Approximate dimensions: 17-1/2" w x 9-1/2" h x 9-1/2" deep.
